Teacher Job Description and Staff Acknowledgment

Position Summary

The Teacher leads the classroom by creating a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive. This role coordinates curriculum, supports the teaching team, manages daily classroom routines, and encourages children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. The Teacher communicates effectively with children, families, staff, and the Director while helping create a positive and organized classroom experience.

Reports To: Director

Key Responsibilities

The Teacher is responsible for the following:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and classroom activities based on early learning standards.
  • Lead by example by modeling positive guidance, teamwork, professionalism, and classroom engagement.
  • Create individual and group activities that support children’s social, cognitive, emotional, and physical growth.
  • Maintain regular communication with families through daily conversations, progress updates, and parent conferences.
  • Ensure all center policies, classroom procedures, and Oregon state child care regulations are followed.
  • Maintain a healthy, clean, safe, and secure classroom environment.
  • Supervise Teacher Assistants and classroom volunteers while ensuring activities, hygiene practices, and safety standards are maintained.
  • Maintain a professional development plan to support continuous quality improvement.

Skills, Qualifications, and Requirements

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of professional child care experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • High energy with the ability to work effectively with children, families, and fellow staff members.
  • Strong knowledge of child development principles.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Current Infant/Child CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Current Oregon Food Handler Card.
  • Successfully complete a criminal background check and required health screening.
  • Meet at least one Oregon-approved educational or experience qualification pathway, including:
  • Qualifying college credits in Early Childhood Education;
  • A recognized early childhood credential;
  • Qualifying child care experience;
  • A minimum of 750 hours in a Certified Child Care Facility; or
  • Oregon Registry Step 3 or higher.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 45 pounds for short distances.
  • Must be able to sit on the floor, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and actively participate in classroom activities throughout the day.
  • Must be able to supervise children indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
