Teacher Assistant/Aide Job Description and Staff Acknowledgment

Position Summary

The Teacher Assistant/Aide helps create a warm, safe, and engaging classroom where children can learn, explore, and play. This entry-level position supports the Teacher and Director with daily classroom routines, educational activities, supervision, and maintaining a clean, organized learning environment. The ideal team member is patient, dependable, energetic, and enjoys interacting with children while fostering their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.

Reports To: Director and/or Teacher

Key Responsibilities

The Teacher Assistant/Aide is responsible for the following:

  • Join children in play, songs, stories, art, movement, and other hands-on learning experiences.
  • Assist Teachers in implementing daily classroom routines and encouraging children’s participation.
  • Use warmth, patience, and positive guidance to support children’s self-help skills, hygiene, diapering, toileting, and positive behavior.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, safe, and inviting classroom environment.
  • Support smooth daily transitions between arrival, classroom activities, meals, rest time, outdoor play, and departure.
  • Supervise children at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Assist with meal service, classroom setup, cleanup, and sanitizing toys and equipment.
  • Follow all center policies, procedures, and Oregon child care licensing regulations.
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with children, families, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.

Skills, Qualifications, and Requirements

Applicants should possess the following:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • No prior child care experience is required; willingness to learn and follow direction is essential.
  • Enjoys playing, reading, singing, creating, moving, and engaging with young children.
  • Dependable, energetic, and able to work cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Uses positive communication with children, families, and fellow staff members.
  • Basic understanding of child development or willingness to learn.
  • Current Infant/Child CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframes).
  • Current Oregon Food Handler Card (or ability to obtain within required timeframes).
  • Successfully complete a criminal background check and required health screening.
  • Meet Oregon Early Learning Division requirements for employment in a licensed child care program.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 45 pounds for short distances.
  • Must be able to sit on the floor, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and actively participate in classroom activities throughout the day.
  • Must be able to supervise children indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
